2018 Youth Summit

YMCA Manningham Youth Services hosted the event which was sponsored by Bendigo Bank, Kiwanis Doncaster and with in-kind support from Manningham City Council, which proved to be a resounding success.

Renowned key note spear and author, Simon Hammond, kicked off the day with an inspiring look at the power and impact young people can make in the world, which set the tone for the rest of the day.  Manningham primary and secondary schools were well represented, with schools making the commitment to send a broad mix of students from different backgrounds and circumstances to have their say on what matters to them.

With thanks to the YMCA team, in association with the Manningham Youth Alliance partners (YMCA Manningham, Doncare, Onemda, Access Health and headspace), and our team of volunteers (affectionately known as ‘the red shirts’), young people were consulted on a range of issues and had their say on what they would like to see in Manningham in terms of service provision, support, recreational activities, youth spaces, public transport options and much more.

Deakin University were also engaged by The Y in an official capacity to undertake research and produce a report on the key findings from the day, in addition to a complementary online survey completed by almost another 200 young people from Manningham who weren’t able to attend on the day.  This report will be used to develop a new strategic plan for YMCA Manningham Youth Services, as well as being used by the Manningham Youth Alliance to inform policy and practice in engaging young people into the future.
